Proper ledger flashing installation by Everflashing

House siding or the exterior finish system must be removed prior to the installation of the ledger board. Approved corrosion resistant flashing is REQUIRED at all ledger board connections to a wall of wood framed construction.Use a continuous flashing with a drip edge like Everflashing’s deck ledger flashing. The threshold shall be carefully flashed and caulked to prevent water intrusion due to splashing from the deck and roof or melting snow. We recommend using Stainless Steel Everflashing to flash your ledger board. Once Everflashing is installed, you do not have to remove the siding to resurface the deck.

Building Safe Durable Decks
Decks are one of the most popular improvement projects that homeowners have added to their houses – and one
of the most profitable for remodelers. Deck construction is scrutinized by owners and building officials more than
ever before, and for good reason. Catastrophic failures in the news and recent reformulations of lumber treatments
have raised the level of concern. It is estimated that there is one major deck failure each week in the US where
people are injured or killed. Learn the issues, the answers and the solutions to inspire confidence from your client
and ensure that your decks will be problem free.

Leaks are common around deck ledgers but may not evidence themselves for years. Leaks lead
to mold and rot in the walls and deck collapse. Ordinary flashing doesn’t provide complete
protection. Learn options for flashing a deck ledger that sheds water and resists even storm driven
rain. See what products to use and how to install them for a weathertight connection.

Everflashing supports NADRA.ORG, and also The Katz Road Show. The Katz Road is now in lumberyard’s in the states of Washington, and Idaho. I hope if you get the chance you will go see Mike Slogatt, and Garry Katz on their annual tour of the United States.
The perfect storm is hitting our industry. We’re suffering from the first damaging waves. Jobsite apprenticeship programs have long disappeared, public schools rarely teach courses in the manual arts, and the permanent loss of valuable construction skills is at risk. Profit margins suffer more and more from errors in material ordering, incorrect installation practices, and callbacks. Poor building practices undermine the respect our profession demands.

Simultaneously, new technologies continue to create revolutionary products in the construction industry, often requiring specialized installation tools and techniques: new building materials create an even greater urgency for education. We can no longer rely on tradition for training. The shortage of serious hands-on educational programs erodes the reputation of our industry. The Katz Roadshow, a unique strategic partnership of leading manufacturers and installation specialists, provides hands-on training clinics for professionals at lumberyards across America. Take your craft and your profession seriously, attend an educational event.

This is the reason to check your deck for proper ledger flashing, and deck ledger attachment

POWDER SPRINGS, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A family celebration went terribly wrong in Powder Springs when a deck collapsed.

Five people were on the deck when it went down.

Two of the victims had to be rushed to the hospital the others were not seriously hurt.

All victims are expected to recover.

Family members said they were grilling on that deck when it gave way. The grill overturned and burned one of the victims.

“I was making burger patties and then I heard this sound. I rushed to the door and all of the deck collapsed,” Irene Crecy said.

Crecy said family members were celebrating her mother’s 72nd birthday.

“All of a sudden the deck caved in, and I went down in the hole with it,” Marzetta Baldwin said.

Baldwin is the woman who was being honored.

Baldwin suffered a few cuts when she fell out of her wheelchair.

Family members examined the deck and spotted several problems.

“I see the rotting, and not only that, I see the nails,” Crecy said.

A second deck collapsed

Columbia firefighters were dispatched to 2001 Newton Drive at 2 p.m. for a report of a structural collapse with multiple people injured and trapped. Firefighters found a wooden deck on the rear of the building had pulled away from the structure and collapsed, the Columbia Fire Department said in a news release.

During the collapse, two adults suffered multiple injuries and were found on the ground, but they were not trapped in the debris. Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Steven Sapp said there were only two people on the deck at the time of the collapse, and no one was underneath.

“They were moderate injuries, but we don’t believe they were life-threatening,” Sapp said. He did not have ages or names for the victims.

Firefighters treated the patients and stabilized the deck to prevent further collapse. Both patients complained of multiple injuries to extremities and back and neck pain. Both were taken to University Hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

The Columbia Department of Building and Site Safety and Development also responded to evaluate the cause of the collapse. The building inspector who responded said he could not comment, but the cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
